53940 Le Genest-Saint-Isle – Demolition of church

The bells rang for the last time this Tuesday noon at the church of Saint-Isle, near Laval. The building is being demolished after a decision by the Prefecture and the diocese of Laval a month ago almost to the day because it threatened to collapse. At noon sharp on Tuesday, nearly a hundred residents , ex-residents or families of former residents of the town came to listen to the bell ring one last time.

Not everything will be destroyed , several elements will be moved elsewhere. “The big bronze bell, signed by a founder called Petit-Homme, will go to the Abbey of Clermont, near the town, that means that it will stay close”, explains Nicole Bouillon the mayor du Genest-Saint-Isle, “we are also going to keep all the commemorative plaques that were placed inside the church, a few vases, a few candlesticks and the baptismal font, in pink marble, will go to the church of Genest but there are also a lot of things that we had to throw away .

The demolition is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

UPDATED WEEKLY!

The demolition work of the Saint-Isle church, in Mayenne, begins this Monday, February 13, 2023.

Having become dangerous for residents and passers-by, one of the two churches in the town of Gesnest-Saint-Isle (Mayenne) will be demolished.

The bishop, the architect of the Buildings of France, and the prefect gave their approval: Saint-Isle church built in 1872 and prohibited to the public for 33 years has been desacralized. Work begins on Monday, February 13.

“We did not take this decision lightly,” assured Nicole Bouillon, mayor of Genest-Saint-Isle, during a public meeting. The forty Genestois present at the village hall were able to see, with a slide show, that the building is far too degraded to be saved at reasonable costs for the municipality or the bishopric.
